U.S. citizens living or traveling outside the United States are being strongly advised not to use the federal government’s Online Passport Renewal system. According to repeated warnings from the U.S. Department of State and U.S. embassies worldwide, the service is available exclusively to eligible applicants who are physically located in a U.S. state or territory when they submit their applications.
Passport canceled upon online submission
This warning is particularly critical for Americans overseas because submitting an online renewal application automatically invalidates the passport being renewed. The State Department emphasizes that the existing passport cannot be used for international travel once the online application is submitted, even if it has not yet expired.
Unlike traditional renewal by mail, applicants using the online system retain their physical passport while the application processes; however, the State Department will electronically cancel the document in its system upon submission. Additionally, online renewal is strictly intended for routine service and cannot be expedited. Applicants must not have international travel planned for at least six weeks from the date of submission.
Online renewal unavailable outside the U.S.
State Department eligibility rules state that applicants must be physically present in a U.S. state or territory at the time of application. Consequently, online renewal is not an option for individuals located abroad.
Americans overseas who need to renew their passports should instead contact the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate for instructions, as renewal procedures outside the United States differ from domestic processes.
What Americans abroad should do
U.S. citizens living, working, studying, or traveling abroad should consult their nearest U.S. embassy or consulate before starting the renewal process to confirm required documents, fees and appointment procedures. Anyone abroad requiring an urgent replacement should contact consular services directly for assistance.
For eligible applicants applying from within the United States, the online system remains operational. Applicants must be at least 25 years old, hold a qualifying passport, meet all eligibility criteria and have no international travel scheduled within six weeks. Check online-renewal eligibility here.
The State Department cautions travelers to use only its official online passport renewal portal, warning that third-party websites claiming to offer online renewal may charge unauthorized fees or compromise personal data.
