121 Foreigners Rescued, 473 Still Missing in Nepal Floods; Full Name List by Nationality

At least 473 foreigners remain unreachable following severe flash flooding across central Nepal, tourism authorities said Friday.

The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) released a situation report indicating that 594 foreigners were initially impacted by sudden flooding along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers. As of 5:30 p.m. local time on Aug. 28, emergency teams had successfully rescued 121 foreigners.

The disaster began Wednesday, Aug. 26, striking the districts of Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, and Gorkha. Heavy torrents flowing through major Himalayan river systems triggered the flooding, severing transportation corridors, damaging infrastructure, and leaving travelers stranded across remote mountain terrain.

According to data compiled by the Tourist Police and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), affected travelers represent more than 30 countries. The highest numbers of affected tourists include citizens from India (98), the United States (65), Ukraine (61), Malaysia (51), Australia (35), the United Kingdom (33), Latvia (29), and Canada (25), alongside 149 Nepalese nationals who were also impacted.

Separately, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said 149 Indian nationals safely crossed from China into Nepal on Friday, Aug. 28. Randhir Jaiswal, the ministry’s official spokesperson, released the full list of the 149 nationals in a post on X and said they had crossed into Nepal safely that day.

Search and rescue operations led by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, the Nepal Tourism Board, and local security agencies remain active across the affected regions. However, ongoing flood risks, potential upstream glacial lake breaches, and widespread highway blockages continue to complicate emergency response efforts.

Authorities have issued travel advisories urging tourists and transportation operators to avoid riverbank regions and vulnerable highway routes in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Kavrepalanchok, and Makwanpur. Trekking agencies, hotels, and guides have been instructed to verify local road conditions before arranging movement through impacted districts.

The Nepal Tourism Board has established multi-channel emergency helplines to assist travelers and coordinate rescue operations, emphasizing that tourist safety remains its top priority.

The U.S. State Department said it is aware of approximately 90 Americans who may have been affected by flooding in the Nepal-China border region, while confirming that three U.S. citizens have been safely rescued in Nepal.

In response to an inquiry from NepYork, a State Department spokesperson said Thursday that the department had received no reports of U.S. citizen deaths.

“The State Department is aware of approximately 90 Americans who may be impacted by the floods in the Nepal-China cross-border region and is closely tracking the situation. We can confirm that three American citizens have been safely rescued in Nepal. We are not aware of any U.S. citizen deaths at this time,” the State Department spokesperson said.

“The Trump Administration has no higher priority than the safety and security of Americans,” the spokesperson added.

The U.S. embassies in Nepal and China are coordinating with local authorities and tour agencies to assist Americans in affected areas, the department said. Nepali-led search-and-rescue operations are continuing.

The State Department also deployed a disaster-response adviser to the region and will provide $500,000 through its global award with Catholic Relief Services. The funding will support emergency shelter, relief supplies, and water, sanitation, and hygiene assistance for flood-affected communities in Nepal, according to the spokesperson.

New Yorker Rashi Shashidharan, 14, has been missing in Nepal alongside her mother, Rekha Shashidharan, 54, since the catastrophe unfolded Wednesday, according to a family member. Rashi and Rekha had been traveling together and last spoke with family members at around 7:30 a.m. local time Wednesday, just over an hour before the floods struck.

Among the Americans listed as missing are Ramesh Sharma, 65, and Neelam Kumari Sharma, 64. Their daughter, Radhika Sharma, said in social media posts that she has been unable to contact her parents following the flooding near the Nepal-China border. She appealed for information from anyone with contacts in Nepal, Gyirong in Tibet, local hospitals, rescue operations, government agencies, and news organizations.

Police emphasized that all missing-person figures remain preliminary and subject to change as search teams reach isolated communities and communications are restored.

Official published lists represent preliminary agency-verified records only; numerous missing travelers are not yet reflected in this report as rescue teams continue to establish communications with isolated communities.
