The U.S. Postal Service is once again shipping free COVID-19 home tests to American households. Starting in late September 2024, each household in the U.S. can receive four free rapid antigen tests with free shipping. These tests help individuals detect COVID-19 and protect themselves and others, regardless of symptoms.

“Your order of COVID tests is completely free – you won’t even pay for shipping. We will start shipping tests the week of September 30. Want to know when your tests are coming? Sign up to receive email alerts when you order!” states the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response on the COVIDTests.gov website.

According to the FDA, the tests will detect current COVID-19 variants and can be used through the end of the year. Each order includes four rapid antigen tests, shipped directly to your home at no cost. While some test boxes may show expired dates, the FDA has extended the shelf life for many tests, allowing them to remain effective through the end of the year.

“Many COVID-19 tests have extended expiration dates, so you may be able to use your COVID-19 tests after the expiration date printed on the box. To find out if your test has an extended expiration date,” the FDA advises on its website. You can check the list of extended expiration dates on the FDA website.

These rapid antigen tests provide results within 30 minutes and do not require lab drop-off. They can be used at home or any other location and are suitable whether or not you’re up to date on your COVID-19 vaccinations. These over-the-counter tests are a convenient way to monitor your health and prevent the spread of the virus.
