New York Introduces Digital ID for Enhanced Security and Convenience: Get Yours Now

Governor Kathy Hochul announced Tuesday the launch of the New York Mobile ID, a digital version of the state-issued driver license, learner permit, or ID, now available on smartphones. This innovative step, taken by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, aims to provide New Yorkers with a voluntary, secure, and convenient identification option.

The New York Mobile ID, compatible with both iOS and Android platforms, can be easily downloaded from the App Store or Google Play. It is designed to give users full control over their personal information, allowing them to decide what data to share and with whom.

“We’re thrilled to give New Yorkers access to this cutting-edge technology which provides convenience and added security for Mobile ID users and those who accept it,” Governor Hochul said. “Not only will New Yorkers be able to quickly display their IDs, but they will have control over the personal information they share.”

Through a partnership with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the New York Mobile ID (MiD) will be accepted at TSA security checkpoints at nearly 30 airports nationwide, including all terminals at LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports, facilitating a seamless identity verification process for air travel.

DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder highlighted the convenience of having an ID on a cellphone, stating, “Everything is on your cell phone these days, and now, your ID can be too. This is an exciting way to provide identification without having to dig through your wallet or purse to find your physical document. Rather than handing over your physical ID with lots of personal information, the Mobile ID gives you greater control over what personal data you share.”

TSA’s Federal Security Director for LaGuardia Airport, Robert Duffy, praised the integration of this technology, saying, “We are pleased to be able to add this state-of-the-art digital ID to the list of acceptable IDs at our security checkpoints. Travelers who want to take advantage of this new capability will find that their New York mobile driver’s license is a convenient option when going through the security process.”

Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton also emphasized the benefits, noting, “The $8 billion investment to transform LaGuardia Airport is paying off in every way with an elevated customer experience and nation-wide and global recognition. From curb to plane, we are working with our partners to provide our customers a world-class experience. Security checkpoints are one of the main topics raised in our customer surveys, and the integration of new technologies such as mobile ID helps expedite the screening process and makes for a more positive and hassle-free travel experience.”

To obtain a New York Mobile ID, residents can follow a few simple steps involving downloading the app, registering their phone number, taking pictures of their physical ID, and taking a selfie for verification. The app will include all attributes of an individual’s physical ID, such as document type and class, as well as organ donor and veteran status.

While the New York Mobile ID is a companion to the physical ID and not all entities will accept it initially, it is currently accepted at select TSA terminals and can be used at any business or organization that chooses to accept it.

The New York Mobile ID stands out for its privacy and security features. It is encrypted, can only be unlocked through biometric authentication or a PIN, and does not store or transmit usage data. The DMV can also push updates to the app for changes in address or driving status, ensuring that the information is always current.
