A new global nonprofit dedicated to the ethical development of artificial intelligence has been established in New York under the leadership of Nepali technologist Ujjwal Roy, the organization announced Wednesday.

The World AI Alliance (WAA) launched on the 70th anniversary of the 1955 Dartmouth Summer Research Project, the historic event credited with naming and initiating the field of AI. The organization aims to promote transparency, fairness, and accountability in AI development across the globe.

Roy, a Nepal-born entrepreneur and founder of ScaleBuild AI, will serve as the founding president. His background includes serving as a government advisor in Nepal, where he contributed to the nation’s first National AI Policy and its 30-year IT roadmap. He is also a member of the IEEE Ethical AI Committee in the United States.

The organization’s mission is built on four primary pillars: advancing ethical governance and policy; discovering global AI talent through educational programs; developing open-access AI infrastructure for sectors such as healthcare and climate resilience; and fostering international collaboration.

Headquartered in New York City, the WAA plans to focus specifically on empowering developing nations and the Global South through its policy and education initiatives.
