In an effort to support working-class families during tax season, Mayor Eric Adams and NYC Health + Hospitals have joined forces to provide free, in-person, and virtual tax preparation services for New Yorkers. This initiative is part of the New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection’s (DCWP) NYC Free Tax Prep program. The services will be available at select City Public Hospitals and aim to assist those with an annual income of $85,000 or less for families, and $59,000 or less for individuals or couples without dependents.
The collaboration includes partnerships with BronxWorks, Grow Brooklyn, Urban Upbound, and Code for America’s GetYourRefund initiative. Various languages, including Spanish, Chinese, and Bengali, will be supported at select NYC Health + Hospitals sites, ensuring accessibility for diverse communities.
Mayor Adams emphasized the city’s commitment to supporting working-class New Yorkers, stating, “Services are available online, in-person, and in multiple languages, making it easy for families to file their taxes and keep money in their pockets.”
The announcement follows the recent increase in the city’s Earned Income Tax Credit, a result of Mayor Adams’ efforts in Albany. The NYC Free Tax Prep initiative aims to help New Yorkers receive their fair share during this tax season.
Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services, Anne Williams-Isom, highlighted the unique partnership with the public hospital system, stating, “In this case, your NYC Health + Hospitals provider might be able to also help you get the peace of mind you need with your taxes.”
Deputy Mayor for Housing, Economic Development, and Workforce, Maria Torres-Springer, emphasized the importance of partnerships in meeting New Yorkers’ needs. She stated, “Partnerships like the one between DCWP, NYC Health + Hospitals, and the city’s tax preparation partners help us meet New Yorkers where they are with free tax prep services that help them put a meaningful sum of money back into their pockets.”
DCWP Commissioner Vilda Vera Mayuga expressed gratitude to the tax preparation partners for working to help New Yorkers get their fullest refund and highlighted the enhanced New York City Earned Income Tax Credit.
NYC Health + Hospitals Vice President and Chief Population Health Officer, Nichola Davis, MD, MS, noted the significance of tax refunds for many families and expressed the organization’s commitment to supporting financial well-being for patients.
The NYC Free Tax Prep Services include various options such as in-person tax preparation, drop-off service, virtual tax preparation, and assisted self-preparation. Over 130 sites across the city will be open throughout the season to provide assistance.
New Yorkers can access the services at various NYC Health + Hospitals and MetroPlusHealth sites across the boroughs, with support in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Bengali. Virtual tax preparation is also available, allowing individuals to securely submit their documents online.
New York State Assemblymember Jenifer Rajkumar praised the initiative, emphasizing the importance of providing tax preparation resources to all New Yorkers, including support in multiple languages.
