In the first month of fiscal year 2025, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) received a total of 38,098 Form I-589 applications for asylum and withholding of removal across its various offices nationwide. This data offers insight into the current state of asylum applications in the United States.
The Miami office received the highest number of applications, totaling 6,161, followed closely by the Houston office with 6,104 applications. Chicago received 5,378 applications, and Arlington had 5,305. Together, these four offices accounted for over 60% of all applications received in October, according to USCIS.
The Newark office received 3,511 applications, followed by San Francisco with 2,939 and Los Angeles with 2,785. The New York office received 2,417 applications, while smaller numbers were reported in New Orleans (1,257), Tampa (1,233), and Boston (1,008).
These figures represent only the first month of the fiscal year, and no data is yet available for subsequent months. Each application may include multiple individuals, as dependents such as spouses and children can be included on a single form.
USCIS emphasizes that these numbers are subject to change due to system updates and post-adjudicative outcomes. The agency also reminds the public that a complete list of USCIS forms and descriptions is available on the official USCIS website.
