Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli of Nepal is set to visit New York, USA, on September 20, leading the Nepali delegation to the 79th United Nations General Assembly. This visit marks his first foreign trip since assuming office on July 15.
The Council of Ministers approved the Prime Minister’s itinerary during a meeting on Thursday, according to Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung. During his visit, PM Oli is scheduled to address the General Assembly on September 26. Additionally, he will participate in the Summit of the Future event, which is set to take place on September 22-23.
Nepal has consistently participated in the United Nations General Assembly, with the Prime Minister often heading the delegation. The United Nations Charter is a cornerstone of Nepal’s foreign policy, and the country has made significant contributions to global peace under the UN’s auspices.
This visit is particularly significant as it breaks the tradition of visiting a neighboring country first, highlighting the importance Nepal places on its role in the international community6. The Prime Minister’s address is expected to focus on Nepal’s commitment to global peace and development, as well as its efforts in various UN-led initiatives.
