Bajeko Sekuwa Brings Nepali Flavors to Queens, New York

Bajeko Sekuwa, a name synonymous with Nepal’s culinary identity, has grown from a modest roadside stall into an international restaurant brand, marking a journey that spans more than four decades.

The story began in the late 1970s near Tribhuvan International Airport in Sinamangal, Kathmandu, where Dinanath Bhandari started selling sekuwa from a small stall. Known affectionately as “Baje,” or grandfather, Bhandari quickly gained popularity for his distinctive recipe—mutton grilled over charcoal and seasoned with a unique blend of homemade spices. The flavor drew customers from far and wide, turning a humble setup into a local sensation.

The name “Bajeko Sekuwa” originated organically, as customers began referring to the dish by its creator. What started with a single bench and limited space soon evolved into a recognizable brand. Bhandari personally prepared the spices and marinated the meat, ensuring a consistent, authentic taste.

In the late 1990s, his son Chetan Bhandari transformed the family business into a structured enterprise, expanding outlets across Kathmandu. Under his leadership, Bajeko Sekuwa became one of Nepal’s first restaurant chains to adopt a franchise model and venture into international markets.

The brand took its first global step in 2018, opening a flagship outlet in Sunnyside, Queens, at 43-16 Queens Blvd. The New York location has since become a cornerstone of Nepali hospitality in the city, bringing traditional flavors from Kathmandu to a global audience.

The menu features its signature mutton sekuwa as the main attraction, alongside popular Nepali dishes such as duck choila, sukuti sandheko, bhutan, and jhol momo. Spices are imported directly from Nepal to preserve authenticity, while the slow charcoal grilling process produces a distinctive aroma that attracts passersby along the busy boulevard.

The restaurant’s interior blends Nepali culture with modern design. Walls are adorned with artwork and photographs reflecting Nepal’s heritage and the brand’s history. The ambiance is warm and family-oriented, complemented by soft Nepali music. Evening lighting and seating arrangements create a premium dining experience, appealing to both the Nepali diaspora and international customers.

Following its success in New York, Bajeko Sekuwa has expanded to other U.S. cities, including Irving, Texas, and Aurora, Colorado. These locations continue to serve the same legacy flavors, catering to growing Nepali communities and introducing the cuisine to broader audiences.

Today, Bajeko Sekuwa stands as more than just a restaurant chain. It represents a living legacy of Nepali taste and hospitality, carrying a story that began in a corner of Kathmandu to major cities across the United States.
