Award-winning Nepali-American social activist Dr. Bishnu Maya Pariyar visited Dedham Middle School, delivering an inspiring talk to an enthusiastic audience of students who greeted her with cheers of “We love you!” In an exciting tribute to her heritage, students performed a traditional dance to a Nepali song.

Dr. Pariyar’s remarkable life story—focused on overcoming caste-based discrimination in Nepal—is featured in the Massachusetts 7th-grade World History and Geography curriculum. During her visit, she shared her personal experiences and expressed her deep affection for the school. “I speak at many schools and universities, but this is one of my favorite places to visit,” she told the students. “You are the most talented and wonderful students I have ever met.”

Since 2022, Dr. Pariyar’s journey has been part of the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s public school curriculum. The Grade 7 lesson focuses on “untouchability” and reducing inequality, aligning with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities).

The curriculum includes eight slideshows detailing Dr. Pariyar’s award-winning work and the history of caste-based discrimination in Nepal. It also highlights her role as the founder of ADWAN (Association for Dalit Women’s Advancement of Nepal), an organization dedicated to empowering marginalized women and children.
Students also study the documentary Untouchable, which chronicles her personal struggles and triumphs. The lesson begins with a video on global inequality and a quote from American civil rights icon Rosa Parks, before transitioning to Dr. Pariyar’s story to connect Nepal’s caste system to broader global efforts for equality.

This open-source resource is available in public schools statewide, aiming to foster an understanding of social injustice and inspire action against discrimination. Students at Dedham Middle School have previously honored Dr. Pariyar by creating wall decorations depicting her journey, showcasing the profound impact of her message on the local community.
Dr. Pariyar’s ongoing advocacy through ADWAN continues to support thousands in Nepal while promoting global human rights.
