New York City will be under an air quality health advisory on Monday, May 18, with officials warning that pollution levels may pose risks for sensitive groups.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation issued the advisory Sunday, forecasting the Air Quality Index (AQI) to reach Level Orange, or between 101 and 150. At this level, air quality is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups, including older adults, young children, pregnant individuals, outdoor workers, and people with heart or lung conditions such as asthma.

Health officials said the general public is unlikely to be affected, but those in higher-risk categories should limit strenuous outdoor activities, take frequent breaks, and monitor for symptoms such as coughing or shortness of breath. Individuals with chronic respiratory conditions are advised to follow their management plans and keep quick-relief medications readily available.

Residents can check real-time air quality conditions at AirNow.gov or through updates from the National Weather Service and the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
