The Social Security Administration has released its annual list of the most popular baby names in New York for 2025, with Noah and Emma taking the top spots for boys and girls, respectively.

The agency said Liam and Olivia ranked as the most popular names nationwide this year, highlighting a slight variation in naming trends between New York and the rest of the country.

In New York, the top five boys’ names for 2025 are Noah, Liam, Theodore, Lucas and Oliver. For girls, the top five names are Emma, Olivia, Mia, Sophia and Charlotte.

The baby names data, compiled annually by the Social Security Administration, reflects naming trends based on Social Security number applications for newborns. The agency has tracked baby names since 1997, with records dating back to 1880.

Officials say the list often reflects cultural influences, including pop culture and shifting social trends. In addition to state rankings, the agency publishes national data, as well as lists of the fastest-rising names each year.

Most parents apply for their child’s Social Security number at birth, typically during their hospital stay. Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano encouraged families to complete the process, noting that a Social Security number is essential for accessing benefits, claiming a child as a dependent for tax purposes, and opening financial accounts.
