Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso and Brooklyn Arts Ambassador Colm Dillane have launched an open call for emerging fashion designers to participate in the 2026 People’s Runway, offering grants, mentorship and a major showcase this fall.
The announcement, released Monday, invites five Brooklyn-based designers to present five complete looks each at a full-service fashion show to be held at Brooklyn Borough Hall in September. Each selected designer will receive a $5,000 grant and access to mentorship opportunities with industry leaders.
The application is open to Brooklyn residents age 18 and older, with submissions due by July 5 at 11:59 p.m., according to the borough president’s office. Designers must be available from the week of July 27 through the show date, and all submitted work must be original. The use of artificial intelligence is not permitted.
Reynoso said the initiative builds on the success of last year’s inaugural People’s Runway, which drew more than 1,000 attendees during New York Fashion Week.
“Last year, The People’s Runway showed that Brooklynites are hungry to see real investments in creatives that call this borough home,” Reynoso said. “If you are an upcoming designer making a splash in Brooklyn’s fashion scene, this application is for you.”
Dillane, founder of the Brooklyn-based fashion label KidSuper, said the program aims to elevate local talent.
“I got my start in fashion just a few blocks from Brooklyn Borough Hall, and it’s so special to come back years later to give emerging designers the opportunity to take their career to the next level,” Dillane said.
The 2025 show featured high-profile attendees including Lauryn Hill, Ne-Yo and Busta Rhymes, and generated international media attention.
Organizers said the borough president’s office will provide the runway venue, production, models, styling, hair and makeup, as well as photography and videography. The office will also handle ticketing, communications and press. Designers are responsible for creating their garments and covering related production needs beyond the grant support.
Notifications for selected designers are expected the week of July 20, with final designs due by Aug. 31.
