In a generous effort to support international college students far from home, the Nepali Temple & Community Center has launched a free daily dinner program. Located at 16-62 Stephen St., Ridgewood, NY 11385, the initiative aims to provide warm, nutritious meals and a sense of community for students facing the challenges of living and studying in a foreign country.
The free dinners are available daily from 8 PM to 9 PM, and students are required to RSVP in advance by calling or texting one of the following numbers: 347-863-6058, (347) 204-6040, (718) 404-4501, or (929) 519-4017. The initiative, which has been running for one month, has already garnered a positive response. Organizers are considering extending the program based on community need and feedback.
“This free dinner is open to all college students, regardless of background, because we believe in fostering a welcoming and supportive community,” said Amit Pratap Shah, Founding Trustee & Secretary of the Ridgewood Nepalese Society. “Many international students, both Nepali and non-Nepali, face financial hardship and rising job insecurity. As the first Nepali Community & Cultural Center in New York, we open our doors to everyone to encourage cultural exchange, build unity, and ensure that no student goes hungry.”
Shah emphasized the program’s core values of kindness, support, and inclusivity. “It’s about creating a space where students can feel at home, share a meal, and connect with others. We want to be a source of comfort for those who may be struggling, whether due to financial stress or the challenges of being far from home,” he added.
The initiative holds special significance for international students, who often face unique challenges such as cultural adjustment, financial constraints, and homesickness. By providing free meals and a welcoming environment, the center hopes to ease some of these burdens and foster a sense of belonging.
“Based on the response and need, we are prepared to continue this initiative,” Shah shared. “Our goal is to ensure that no student feels alone or unsupported during their time here.”
Students are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to enjoy a warm dinner and connect with others in a welcoming and inclusive setting.
