U.S. Embassy Supports Ceramics Workshop in Nepal, Fostering Artistic Exchange

A five-day ceramics workshop, supported by the U.S. Embassy in Nepal, was held at Pottery Square in Bhaktapur. The event brought together American and Nepali artists to facilitate an exchange of artistic experiences and techniques.

Prominent American ceramics artists Mark and Joyce Nafziger collaborated with ten women ceramic artists from various districts across Nepal. The workshop focused on modernizing traditional artistic practices to economically empower local communities involved in ceramics.

Participants engaged in on-site art practices, creating clay items that showcase the unique characteristics of their respective regions. The event featured artists from Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Sarlahi, Janakpur, and Kaski districts.

Local ceramic artist Priya Lakshmi Prajapati emphasized the importance of such workshops in enhancing skills and supporting economic empowerment, particularly in light of limited state investment in preserving cultural heritage.

The Nafzigers shared insights into American ceramics techniques and fostered bilateral discussions on ceramics artistry. The workshop culminated in a joint exhibition of the participants’ clay works at the Culture Café in Pottery Square on Friday afternoon.
