138% Increase in Nepali Students Receiving US Visas in FY 2024 Q1

The first three months of the US fiscal year 2024 (October-December 2023) saw a significant increase in the number of Nepali students receiving US visas. Compared to the same period in FY 2023, there was a 138% increase, with a total of 2,896 Nepalis receiving student visas. This positive trend is further reflected in the number of visas issued each month: October (508), November (784), and December (1604).

In FY 2023, a total of 1,212 Nepalis received student visas during the first three months (October-December 2022), with individual month figures being: October (120), November (477), and December (615). The number of dependents receiving F2 visas also rose. In the first three months of FY 2024, 111 dependents of Nepali students obtained F2 visas compared to 82 in the first three months of FY 2023.

The data only represents the first quarter of the fiscal year, and the full-year trend may differ. The U.S. Embassy in Kathmandu prioritizes student visa applications and provides the following guidance for applicants to prepare for their interview:

1. Valid Passport: This document serves as your official identification and must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay in the United States.
2. Appointment Confirmation Letter: This letter confirms your scheduled visa interview date and time. It’s crucial to bring this document as proof of your appointment.
3. I-20 Form (for F-1 visas) or DS-2019 Form (for J-1 visas): This form, signed by both you and the designated school official, verifies your acceptance and enrollment in a US educational program.
4. SEVIS Fee Payment Receipt: The SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) fee is a mandatory payment required for all F and J visa applicants. Bring the receipt as proof of payment.
5. Recent Educational Certificates: Submit official transcripts, diplomas, or certificates from your previous educational institutions to demonstrate your academic qualifications.
6. Two Recent Passport-Sized Photographs (2×2 inches): These photographs must meet specific size and format requirements as outlined by the US Embassy. Ensure they are recent and taken within the past six months.
7. DS-160 Confirmation Page: The DS-160 is the online nonimmigrant visa application form. Print and bring the confirmation page as proof of your completed application.

By presenting these seven documents along with any additional requested materials, you can demonstrate your preparedness for the visa interview and potentially streamline the process.
