NYPD Detective Shot in Brooklyn, Expected to Recover After Vest Stops Bullet; 18-Year-Old in Custody

Commissioner Tisch and Mayor Mamdani provide updates on an ongoing investigation in Brooklyn.

An NYPD detective was shot early Sunday in Brooklyn but is expected to recover after his ballistic vest stopped the bullet, officials said.

The shooting occurred around 4:14 a.m. in the Crown Heights neighborhood, where officers assigned to a Mobile Field Force detail encountered an armed individual near Nostrand Avenue and St. John’s Place, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said during a morning briefing.

Three officers fired their weapons after exiting an unmarked police vehicle and attempting to engage the suspect, who had been seen minutes earlier on surveillance video carrying a firearm. The suspect was not struck by police gunfire and fled the scene before being apprehended a few blocks away following a foot chase.

During the encounter, Detective Robert Carroll, assigned to the NYPD’s Sex Offender Monitoring Unit, was hit in the back of his vest. He suffered a contusion and was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he is expected to make a full recovery, Tisch said. A second officer sustained minor injuries to the face and shoulder.

An 18-year-old male suspect was taken into custody after resisting arrest. Officers deployed a Taser before apprehending him. Police recovered a 9mm firearm at the scene. Authorities have not released the suspect’s identity, and the investigation remains ongoing.

“This vest saved his life,” Tisch said, noting that officers were deployed in the area as part of the department’s Fourth of July Violence Reduction Plan.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he was relieved the injuries were not more serious and praised officers who worked extended shifts over the holiday weekend.

“Even what appears to be a routine patrol assignment can turn life-threatening in an instant,” Tisch said.

The incident comes as the city marked the ninth anniversary of the fatal shooting of NYPD Detective Miosotis Familia, who was killed while sitting in a police vehicle in 2017.

Officials also addressed a separate shooting Saturday night in Coney Island, where eight people — including four children — were wounded during a family barbecue. Police said a masked gunman fired multiple rounds into a courtyard on West 30th Street before fleeing.

Seven of the victims are expected to survive, while a 21-year-old woman remains in critical condition. Investigators are examining a possible connection to a recent gang-related homicide in the area.

Police said both incidents remain under investigation.
