Mamdani, Hochul Unveil Free World Cup Events Across NYC

New York City officials on Monday announced a series of free fan events across all five boroughs for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, aiming to bring match viewings and cultural programming to residents citywide.

Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani, joined by Gov. Kathy Hochul and the FIFA World Cup 2026 New York New Jersey Host Committee, said the initiative will feature live match screenings, cultural events and local business activations at no cost to attendees.

The events, scheduled from June through July 2026, will take place in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and Staten Island, forming what officials described as one of the largest free fan experiences tied to the tournament in the United States.

“When I think back on my first World Cup, some of my most meaningful memories weren’t in the stadium, they were in the fan zones,” Mamdani said. “That’s what we’re building here: a World Cup that belongs to New Yorkers.”

Hochul said the effort is designed to ensure residents benefit from the global event while boosting local economies.

“These free fan events across all five boroughs bring the excitement of the game to every New Yorker in every community — supporting our small businesses and bringing New Yorkers together,” she said.

The programming will include daily events and match screenings at major public sites, including the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, Rockefeller Center in Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridge Park. Additional locations include Bronx Terminal Market and Staten Island University Hospital Community Park.

Organizers said the Brooklyn and Queens sites will host extended programming, while smaller borough events will focus on matchday experiences and local cultural activities.

Alex Lasry, CEO of the NYNJ 2026 World Cup Host Committee, said the events are intended to make the tournament accessible beyond stadium venues.

“We’re creating fan experiences that are affordable, accessible, and authentically New York New Jersey — for visitors and, just as importantly, for the residents who call this region home,” Lasry said.

Officials said the Staten Island venue has already received upgrades, including a new LED scoreboard funded through a partnership between the city’s Economic Development Corporation and the host committee. The improvements are expected to remain in place after the tournament.

The citywide programming will run for 39 days, with additional details on performers, partners and schedules expected in the coming weeks.
