On June 2, 2025, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducted a raid on a suspected stash house in Mercedes, Texas, resulting in the apprehension of 16 undocumented immigrants.
The operation, initiated after a tip from an anonymous caller on June 1, revealed that multiple undocumented individuals were being harbored at a residence in the city. The group included nationals from Nepal, Albania, Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala.
According to an ICE press release, the agency collaborated with the Mercedes Police Department, which conducted a welfare check at the property. During the check, authorities spoke with the homeowner, who admitted to sheltering approximately 16 individuals inside the home.
The raid was executed by ICE’s Rio Grande Valley team, with support from ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations, U.S. Border Patrol, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Office of Field Operations.
“This operation underscores the critical role that the public and local law enforcement partners play in identifying and disrupting human smuggling operations,” said Mark Lippa, Deputy Special Agent in Charge of ICE Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in the Rio Grande Valley. “Transnational criminal networks continue to endanger lives for profit. ICE will relentlessly pursue those who exploit vulnerable individuals for financial gain.”
All 16 individuals were taken into custody for immigration violations. While ICE confirmed the nationalities of those detained, the exact number of Nepali citizens among them was not specified, and their identities have not been disclosed. Additionally, a Mexican national is currently being questioned for potential involvement in human smuggling activities.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to uncover further details about the suspected smuggling operation.
