The U.S. Department of State has announced a visa restriction policy targeting foreign government officials and employees involved in supporting illegal immigration. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the importance of securing America’s borders to make the country safer, stronger, and more prosperous, as he unveiled the new policy on Wednesday.
This ban will apply to foreign government officials, immigration and customs officers, as well as officials from airport and port authorities who assist illegal immigration. The U.S. Department of State further stated that the ban will also be enforced on individuals responsible for knowingly aiding illegal immigration into the United States.
The visa ban will be imposed on those who fail to enforce immigration laws or who establish and implement policies and practices that facilitate the illegal transit of foreign nationals seeking to enter the U.S. through its southwest border. Rubio emphasized the need for countries along immigrant routes to play their part in preventing the illegal transit of foreign nationals into the U.S.
“This new policy will complement our existing 3C policy, expanded in 2024, pertaining to private sector actors who knowingly provide transportation and travel services designed primarily for illegal aliens traveling to the United States,” Rubio clarified.
Rubio stated that these measures will continue until those officials take responsibility for ensuring that policies are in place and existing laws are enforced to prevent the transit of such individuals. He asserted that the U.S. will not back down in defending its national security interests.
According to the U.S. Department of State, the visa ban policy is in accordance with Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which authorizes the Secretary of State to render inadmissible any alien whose entry into the United States “would have potentially serious adverse foreign policy consequences for the United States.” Certain family members may also be covered by these restrictions.
