New York City Council Member Shekar Krishnan has called for greater transparency and accountability after the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) recommended dropping federal corruption charges against Mayor Eric Adams. The DOJ’s decision has raised serious questions about Adams’ leadership and his relationship with former President Donald Trump, leading Krishnan to label the Mayor as “unfit to govern.”

In a statement, Krishnan emphasized that Adams’ actions have undermined public trust. “The Mayor of New York City is unfit to govern when he places his personal interest over the public,” Krishnan said. The Council Member’s criticism follows the DOJ’s recommendation to drop the charges “without prejudice,” meaning the case could potentially be revisited later.

The federal charges against Adams stemmed from an investigation into allegations of corruption. However, the DOJ’s decision not to pursue the case further was reportedly influenced by Adams’ perceived ability to support critical, ongoing federal efforts, particularly in relation to immigration policies. The DOJ has not made any explicit mention of the Mayor’s actions, but sources suggest the recommendation was connected to his support for federal immigration initiatives, raising concerns about his actions behind closed doors.

Krishnan, who represents the diverse 25th District encompassing Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, and Woodside, expressed serious concern about the implications of Adams’ cooperation with the Trump administration. He questioned the Mayor’s private conversations with Trump and his administration, specifically regarding local immigration policies and other matters related to New York City law. The Council Member asked, “What commitments on local immigration policy has Mayor Adams made privately with President Trump? What New York City laws did the Mayor discuss with the Trump administration as he sought their dismissal of his case? What legal protections for all New Yorkers will the Mayor give up to escape prosecution?”

Krishnan also highlighted the broader concern that Adams may have sacrificed crucial legal protections for New Yorkers in exchange for the DOJ’s decision to drop the charges. According to Krishnan, this reflects a pattern of behavior in which the Mayor places his personal interests above the needs of the city.

As the situation develops, Krishnan is calling on Mayor Adams to clarify the specifics of his dealings with the Trump administration and to assure the public that he has not made any backroom deals at the expense of the people he is supposed to serve. The Council Member is urging the Mayor to demonstrate transparency and restore public trust, noting that the people of New York deserve a leader who prioritizes the city’s needs above personal gain.

The debate over Mayor Adams’ leadership is expected to intensify in the coming weeks as more details about his interactions with the DOJ and the Trump administration potentially come to light. Both the public and elected officials are awaiting clarity on the Mayor’s position and whether he will continue to lead the city amid these growing concerns.
