Tragic Accident Leaves Nepali Student in the U.S. Fighting for Life; Community Unites to Support

A GoFundMe account has been created to support Rabina Poudel, a Nepali woman critically injured and hospitalized in West Haven, Connecticut.

Ms. Poudel, from Ward No. 13 in Baglung Municipality, Gandaki Province, Nepal, had recently arrived in the United States to pursue her Master’s Degree in Public Health at the University of New Haven. Driven by hopes for a better future, she began her studies with optimism and determination.

However, on the evening of September 29, 2024, Ms. Poudel’s life was altered drastically. While crossing a crosswalk near her university, she was struck by a vehicle in the second lane, despite another driver in the first lane signaling her to cross.

The impact was severe, leaving her with critical injuries to her spine and pelvis. She was immediately rushed to Yale Hospital, where she has already undergone three major surgeries. Ms. Poudel remains in a fragile state, both physically and mentally.

This tragic accident has created significant challenges for Ms. Poudel, as she now faces a long and difficult recovery with extensive medical expenses, transportation needs, housing issues, and the uncertainty of continuing her studies.

In response, the Society of Nepalese in America, based in Branford, Connecticut, has launched a GoFundMe campaign with a goal of $50,000 to help support her.

The Society has issued an appeal to the community, encouraging everyone to contribute. They emphasized the importance of collective support in ensuring Ms. Poudel receives the necessary care to aid her recovery.

Those wishing to assist can donate through the GoFundMe page organized by the Society of Nepalese in America. Every contribution, large or small, will make a difference in helping Ms. Poudel through this difficult time.
