Deepak Oli, a 30-year-old Nepali man, was killed early Sunday morning during a robbery at the Gator Stop #3 gas station, located at the intersection of I-35 and Ross Road North, just north of Elm Mott.
The McLennan County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the deadly incident, which occurred around 5 a.m. local time on Sunday. Oli was employed as a cashier at the gas station, where he was shot by the robbers during the robbery, leading to his death.
Originally from Banphikot in West Rukum, Nepal, Oli had arrived in the United States last year without a visa, entering from the Mexico border after paying a large sum of money to agents. He leaves behind a wife and a 5-year-old daughter, who remain in Nepal.
Officials have informed Oli’s family about the tragic incident and are actively investigating the scene. The McLennan County Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with information to come forward.
Notably, there have been several incidents of Nepalis being killed or injured in robberies at gas stations in the USA, mostly occurring during nighttime hours.
Last year, Bhesraj Lamichhane, a Nepali store owner in Colorado, was shot and killed by a gunman while working at a convenience store in Wheat Ridge, Colorado.
Similarly, Dipendra Joshi, a young Nepali living in Euless, Texas, was shot and injured while returning from his job at a gas station.
Additionally, 32-year-old Bhim Bahadur Nath was seriously injured in Austin, Texas, last year when armed robbers opened fire on him while he was working at a gas station.
