U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has announced a significant update regarding the validity of Green Cards for lawful permanent residents. As of September 10, 2024, USCIS will automatically extend the validity of expired Green Cards to 36 months for individuals who have applied for renewal or replacement through Form I-90.

This change aims to assist applicants facing extended processing times for their renewal applications. Previously, receipt notices for Form I-90 provided a validity extension of only 24 months. With the new update, applicants will receive a receipt notice that clearly states the Green Card is valid for an additional 36 months from the expiration date on the card.

The updated receipt notice can be presented alongside an expired Green Card as proof of continued lawful permanent resident status. This documentation not only confirms the holder’s residency but also serves as authorization to work and travel within the United States during the extended period.

USCIS has emphasized that this extension is particularly beneficial for those experiencing delays in processing their applications. By providing an official receipt notice with a longer validity period, USCIS aims to minimize disruptions in employment and travel for lawful permanent residents.

Additionally, individuals who have lost their Green Card while awaiting a replacement may contact USCIS to schedule an appointment at a field office. During this appointment, they can receive an Alien Documentation, Identification, and Telecommunications (ADIT) stamp, which will also serve as temporary evidence of their status for 36 months.
