After a 10,000-Mile Journey to Enter the U.S. Without a Visa and Spending $70,000, a Nepali Father’s American Dream Ends in Tragedy in Boston

In a heart-wrenching tale of dreams and despair, Bharat Roka Magar from Rukum embarked on a perilous journey of over 10,000 miles, spending more than $70,000 to chase the American Dream. His quest began in October 2022, crossing the Mexican border without a visa, only to meet a tragic end in Boston nearly two years later.

Bharat’s arduous journey saw him paying a hefty sum to human traffickers, hoping for a better future. After securing asylum in November 2023, he was on the brink of reuniting with his wife, Jugsari Roka Magar, and their children, Priya Roka Magar and Sanam Roka Magar.

However, fate had other plans. On Monday afternoon, Bharat succumbed to a heart attack at Baystate Health in Massachusetts, where he had been admitted to the Neuro ICU, leaving his family in Nepal devastated.

The 39-year-old’s untimely death has plunged his wife, 20-year-old daughter Priya, and 15-year-old son Sanam, who reside in Dang’s Ghorahi, into mourning. His elderly parents, Sirdhar and Sukumaya Roka, are also grief-stricken.

Having recently moved to Boston and started working, Bharat’s sudden demise has left his family in financial turmoil. Neighbor Chetan Budha Magar revealed plans to start a GoFundMe campaign to support the family and cover funeral expenses, as Bharat’s debts remain unpaid.

Chetan Budha Magar, speaking about the situation, said, “Bharat’s family is facing immense hardship due to his untimely death. They are not only grieving his loss but also struggling financially. We plan to start a GoFundMe campaign to support them and cover the funeral expenses. Bharat was unable to pay off his debts before he passed away, so any contributions will be greatly appreciated.”
