Foreign drivers, including those holding a U.S. driver’s license, will face prosecution if they drive in Nepal without an international permit. They will be treated as unlicensed drivers.
A few years ago, the Nepal Transport Department stopped converting foreign driver’s licenses into Nepali licenses. As a result, individuals with foreign licenses must now go through the standard process to obtain a Nepali driver’s license. Previously, foreign license holders could acquire a Nepali license without taking written and practical tests, but this exemption is no longer valid.
According to Jeevan Kumar Shrestha, head of the Valley Traffic Police Office in Kathmandu, anyone driving in Nepal with only a foreign driver’s license and without an international permit will be prosecuted accordingly.
“If you don’t have an international driving permit, you cannot drive in Nepal. This means you will be treated as if you do not have a license,” Shrestha explained.
“If an accident occurs, the action taken will depend on the severity of the accident. Factors such as injuries, property damage, and fault will be considered. Costs for treatment and vehicle compensation will also be determined,” he added.
“Even with a permit, accidents are not allowed. Traffic rules must be followed. If someone is killed while violating these rules, the appropriate penalties will apply. All legal proceedings in Nepal are conducted according to Nepali law. While the permit itself will not be revoked, drivers must have either a Nepali or international driving permit to operate a vehicle in Nepal,” Shrestha emphasized.
“An international driving permit specifies the countries where it is valid and the type of vehicle that can be driven. Drivers must adhere to the traffic rules of the country they are in. If a fatal accident occurs while obeying the rules, the case will be handled according to the applicable laws,” Shrestha concluded.
Foreign drivers can obtain an international driving permit (IDP) to drive in Nepal and other countries. While driving with an IDP in Nepal, it is essential to carry the original foreign license as well. US drivers can use their licenses to get an IDP, allowing them to drive in 180 countries, including Nepal.
Driving without a valid license and insurance is illegal in most countries, so it is advisable for those planning to drive abroad to obtain an IDP in addition to their US driver’s license. Many countries do not recognize a US driver’s license but accept an IDP. Although Nepal does not convert US licenses, it does accept IDPs. The American government authorizes the American Automobile Association (AAA) to issue IDPs.
To apply for an IDP, individuals can visit AAA branches in person or send applications by mail. The process requires completing an application form, providing two passport-sized photos, a photocopy of the US driver’s license, and a $20 fee. Applications submitted by mail should include a $20 money order or check, with both photos signed on the back. Express mail services incur additional charges.
