The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) and the NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC) announced the commencement of a $10.5 million renovation project at the Corona Health Center in Queens. Managed by DDC for DOHMH, the project is set for completion by spring 2026.

An artist’s rendering reveals the future building façade with newly restored windows, showcasing the transformation aimed at serving the community better. Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan emphasized the importance of a dignified environment for public health services, stating, “The people of Queens deserve to have public health services delivered in a dignified environment that is as welcoming physically as it is professionally.”

DDC Commissioner Thomas Foley highlighted the benefits of the renovation, which includes making the building more accessible, beautifying the space, and restoring the façade and roof. The removal of scaffolding post-renovation will mark a significant milestone in enhancing the local healthcare system.

Located at 34-33 Junction Boulevard, the Corona Health Center specializes in sexual and reproductive health care. The renovation will overhaul the main entrance and lobby for better accessibility and renovate the 6,500-square-foot cellar. The building’s façade will be restored with new windows and doors, while the roof will be repaired and new skylights added to improve natural lighting.

The Corona Sexual Health Clinic offers services such as STI screening, testing, and treatment; birth control and emergency contraception; and HPV, hep A, hep B, and meningitis vaccinations. The clinic will maintain its regular hours, open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Additionally, the site houses NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health, Jackson Heights, which provides primary care for children and adults.

Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. praised the initiative, noting, “This renovation of the Corona Health Center will ensure that residents of Corona and surrounding areas who seek sexual and reproductive health care will have a top-quality facility in their neighborhood that they can rely on for decades to come.”

Council Member Francisco Moya emphasized the commitment to the health and well-being of Queens families, while Council Member Lynn Schulman, Chair of the Health Committee, remarked on the importance of accessibility in healthcare.

Assemblymember Jessica González-Rojas (District 34) celebrated the project, highlighting its significance in providing ADA-compliant facilities and welcoming patients of all backgrounds. Michelle Lewis, CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health, expressed excitement for the project, acknowledging its impact on continuing to deliver high-quality healthcare services regardless of patients’ ability to pay or immigration status.

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene works to protect and promote the health of 8 million New Yorkers. With more than 200 years of leadership in public health, the agency’s efforts range from dining establishment inspections to supporting community health clinics.

The Department of Design and Construction is the City’s primary capital construction project manager. Supporting Mayor Adams’ vision of growth, sustainability, and equity, DDC partners with various agencies to bring innovative design and construction strategies to city projects.
