The Nepali Embassy in the USA is set to host a Consular Service Mobile Camp in Los Angeles, California, scheduled from July 9th to 13th. The camp will be held at the Pashupatinath Buddha Temple, operating daily from 9 am to 5 pm, with an hour’s break for lunch from 1 pm to 2 pm.
For those seeking e-passport renewal at the camp, it is essential to adjust your mobile or laptop’s time zone to Kathmandu, Nepal. Then, visit the government website, navigate to the passport application section, and select the appropriate option—Renewal/Replacement (Lost/Stolen) for MRP or ‘First Issuance’ for handwritten passports. Appointments for July 4th are exclusively for the Los Angeles mobile camp.
“Complete the required information, download the PDF form with its barcode, and email a scanned copy of the form, along with photocopies of your passport and citizenship, to the embassy’s email address (passportCA@nepalembassyusa.org), including your mobile number for verification, by July 3rd. Without prior verification of these documents, biometric data cannot be processed, and consequently, services at the camp will be inaccessible,” stated the embassy in the notice.
Local coordinators will inform applicants of their scheduled service date and time via email or phone. Attendees must bring their citizenship documents (and copies), a minor identity card and parents’ citizenship copies for minors, the original passport and a copy, and a duly filled online form for Biometrics and a printout copy with a barcode.
For a standard 34-page passport renewal, the fee is $153 when paid through a debit card and $150 plus a 3% processing fee for credit card transactions. For children under the age of 10, the fee is $76.75 for debit card payments and $75 plus a 3% fee for credit card payments. In cases of lost or damaged passports, adults are required to pay $306 with a debit card or $300 plus a 3% fee with a credit card. For lost or damaged passports of children under 10, the fee is $153 for debit card payments and $150 plus a 3% fee for credit card payments. These fees are payable exclusively via debit or credit card.
Applicants must bring a pre-paid return envelope with a full address to receive their new passports. For further information, contact Rishi Punnakhar Dhakal, Honorary Consul General of Nepal in San Diego, at Cell No. (626) 320-2437 or the Nepali Embassy in Washington DC.
The appointment slots for July 4th are reserved solely for the mobile camp services from July 9th to 13th in Los Angeles. The embassy will be closed on July 4th; thus, clients who wish to receive service from the embassy in Washington DC are advised against scheduling appointments for that date to avoid service disruptions.
The mobile camp addresses the pressing need for consular services in California, where over a thousand Nepalis await passport renewal. The cost and time required to travel to Washington DC for renewal have been prohibitive for many, including the elderly, children, and those with disabilities. Some green card holders, whose passports have more than six months of validity, opt to renew in Nepal due to the convenience and lower costs compared to traveling to Washington DC.
The commitment to continue temporary consular services was reaffirmed in discussions with ambassadors and embassies, as stated by Honorary Consul General Rishi Dhakal in a recent interview with NepYork.
