In a first-of-its-kind celebration, the Nepali community in New York State is being honored with a dedicated “Nepali Community Day” on May 28th at the New York State Capitol. Assemblymember Steven Raga, in collaboration with the Nepal Consulate General, is organizing the program that coincides with Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month.
Assemblymember Raga represents District 30, which includes Woodside, Elmhurst, Maspeth, Jackson Heights, Astoria, and Middle Village — home to the largest Nepali diaspora in the USA. He is known for actively participating in and prioritizing Nepali community events.
Over 30 Nepali organizations have joined to support the event, showcasing the community’s unity and vibrant culture. Assemblymembers Sarahana Shrestha and Jenifer Rajkumar have also lent their support as co-sponsors of the event, highlighting the event’s importance.
‘Nepali Community Day in Albany is more than just a celebration; it is a pivotal step towards building a robust pathway for the Nepali community to Albany and ensuring that the voices of the Nepali community are heard by the New York State lawmakers. For decades, the Nepali community has made invaluable contributions to New York State, and now it is time for us to secure our seat at the table where crucial decision-making takes place,’ said Furshang Dolma Lama on Facebook, Director of Community Affairs Assembly District-30 at New York State Assembly.
The inaugural Nepali Community Day promises a vibrant celebration of culture and community spirit. Attendees are encouraged to wear traditional attire, adding to the colorful display of national pride.
Festivities kick off at 9:30 am on May 28th at 198 State Street. Security measures will be in place, and attendees are advised to carry small bags for a smooth entry process.
The day is divided into three parts. It will kick off with a Community Reception at the Legislative Office Building, Meeting Room 944-A, to thank the event’s sponsors. This will be followed by a Cultural Event on the Third Floor Terrace of the Legislative Office Building, where you can experience traditional Nepali dance, music, and cuisine. The day will conclude with a Legislative Recognition ceremony, a historic moment where the Nepali community will be formally introduced before the New York State Assembly and Senate.
Light refreshments will be served upon arrival, followed by a lunch featuring Nepali culinary delights at 1:30 pm.
For those traveling from NYC, a convenient round-trip bus service is available for $30 (limited seats, reservations recommended). The bus will depart early in the morning and return in the evening.
