Rishi Punnakhar Dhakal, honorary consul general of Nepal for the San Diego, has received a four-year extension of his term. Appointed honorary consul in 2013, Dhakal will now hold the position until 2028.
Dhakal is a prominent figure in the import of ready-made garments and handicrafts from Nepal to the United States. He established his company, Rising International Inc., in 2005 and grew it into a leading importer of Nepali goods by 2013. His success led to recognition from the Nepali government in 2014, when he received an award from then-President Ram Baran Yadav.
Dhakal has since expanded his import business to include goods from Thailand, China, and India. In addition to import businesses, Dhakal has also invested in restaurants and real estate in California, with the Dhakal family holding investments in several commercial properties there.
Dhakal is also active in Nepal, investing a portion of his earnings as a non-resident Nepali (NRN) back into the country. The Dhakal family has investments in various sectors, including hydropower, the Nepal Cancer Hospital, and the Takshashila Academy.
The Dhakal family is known for their commitment to social work. They were instrumental in coordinating the collection of $1.1 million for the establishment of the Pashupati Foundation in Los Angeles through a Mahapurana event. The Dhakal family also provided a direct financial contribution of $75,000 to the foundation.
While appointed to serve the San Diego area, Dhakal has extended his efforts throughout California, with a particular focus on the Los Angeles area.
