The Nepali community in the USA is gearing up to celebrate Fagu, also known as Holi, the vibrant festival of colors.

If you’re in Brooklyn, Balewa Society America is hosting a Holi celebration on Sunday, March 24th, 2024 from 11 AM to 6 PM at Highland Park, Jackie Robinson Parkway.
Nepali community members can also participate in the annual Phagwah (Holi) celebration organized by Queens Borough President Donovan Richards on Monday, March 18th, 2024 at 6 PM at the Helen Marshall Cultural Center at Queens Borough Hall.
Meanwhile, in Kathmandu, Nepal, the traditional installation of the ‘Chir’ marked the commencement of Fagu festivities today. The ‘Chir’ is a bamboo pole decorated with colorful cloths, symbolizing the start of the festival.
Local resident Tirthalal Tandukar explained that the placement of the ‘Chir’ signifies the beginning of the festival and people pay homage to it. Following the celebrations, locals collect pieces of cloth from the ‘Chir’ for good luck, and it is then dispersed in the Tundikhel ground.
This year, Holi falls on Saturday, March 24th in hilly regions including Kathmandu Valley, and on Sunday, March 25th in the Terai/Madhesh region.
