Fireworks illuminate the Manhattan skyline during the annual Independence Day celebration on Friday night, drawing thousands of spectators to the East River waterfront.

The Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks display, one of the nation’s largest, featured a synchronized show of colorful pyrotechnics launched from barges along the river, accompanied by music and live performances. Crowds gathered across Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens to witness the annual tradition marking the United States’ 250th anniversary year buildup.

This year’s celebration carries added historical significance as the United States marks the 250th anniversary of its independence, declared in 1776.

The formal beginning of American independence dates to 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted on July 2 to break away from Great Britain. However, after final revisions and approval of the Declaration of Independence, the document was formally adopted on July 4, establishing the date that is now observed annually as Independence Day.

Before independence, 13 North American colonies were under British rule. Colonists grew increasingly dissatisfied with policies such as taxation without representation, trade restrictions, and political interference. Amid rising tensions, the First Continental Congress convened in Philadelphia in 1774 with representatives from 12 colonies, excluding Georgia. The American Revolutionary War, which began in 1775, ultimately propelled the independence movement to a decisive stage.

A five-member committee led by Thomas Jefferson was tasked with drafting the Declaration of Independence. The committee included John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman and Robert Livingston. Jefferson’s draft was revised before being approved by Congress.

The original 13 colonies that gained independence were Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina and Rhode Island. From those beginnings, the United States has since expanded to 50 states.

City officials reported heightened security and a strong turnout as residents and visitors celebrated the holiday across the city.
