NYC Immigrant Affairs Office Mourns Tibetan Activist Lobsang Palden

New York City’s Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) on Sunday expressed sorrow over the death of Tibetan activist Lobsang Palden, also known as Lobga Rangzen, following his act of self-immolation outside the United Nations.

In a statement, the agency said Palden “spent his life committed to amplifying the voices of the Tibetan community and fighting for fundamental human rights,” adding that his loss would be “felt profoundly throughout our city.”

The office described the incident as a reminder of the hardships faced by displaced communities, including persecution and the ongoing struggle for identity, culture and belonging.

New York City is home to a diverse immigrant population, including members of the Tibetan community who have come to the United States seeking asylum, freedom and opportunity, the statement noted.
