USCIS Says Nepali Applicant With Warrant Was Arrested After Biometrics Appointment

New U.S. Diversity Visa rule requires mandatory passport information.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services said a Nepali applicant was arrested after the agency discovered an active arrest warrant during a biometrics appointment and coordinated with local law enforcement. In a social media post Tuesday, USCIS said the person was wanted for possession of child pornography and had been apprehended pending criminal proceedings.

The agency said the warrant was identified when the Nepali applicant came to a USCIS office for a routine biometrics appointment, which is part of the immigration process for many applicants. USCIS said officers quickly alerted local law enforcement after the background check or screening process revealed the warrant.

USCIS used the case to highlight its screening procedures and public safety role. The agency said it regularly conducts background and security checks on immigration applicants and that those checks can uncover outstanding warrants or other criminal concerns before a case moves forward.
