DHS Increases Self-Deportation Stipend to $2,600 and Offers Free Flights via App

The Department of Homeland Security announced Tuesday that it is increasing financial incentives for undocumented immigrants who voluntarily leave the United States, offering a $2,600 stipend and a free flight home through the federal CBP Home app.

The initiative builds on last year’s “Home for the Holidays” campaign and marks the first anniversary of President Donald Trump’s return to office. DHS said the expanded offer is intended to encourage voluntary departures, which the department described as less costly and more efficient than formal deportations.

According to DHS, about 2.2 million people have self-deported since January 2025, and nearly 100,000 have used the CBP Home app to arrange travel out of the country. The department said its data show each voluntary departure costs roughly $5,100, compared with an average of $18,245 for a standard deportation.

“Illegal aliens should take advantage of this gift and self-deport because if they don’t, we will find them, we will arrest them, and they will never return,” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement. Noem described the stipend increase as “a generous incentive” supported by U.S. taxpayers.

The department said participating individuals who depart voluntarily may qualify for waiver of certain civil fines or penalties. The CBP Home app, launched in 2025, allows eligible individuals to register online, submit their travel details, and arrange government-funded transportation.

The new offer comes as immigration enforcement remains a central element of the Trump administration’s second term. DHS reported more than 675,000 deportations during the president’s first year back in office.
