Nima Rinji Sherpa, an 18-year-old mountaineer from Nepal, has made history by becoming the youngest climber to successfully summit all 14 of the world’s peaks exceeding 8,000 meters. He achieved this remarkable feat on Wednesday morning when he reached the summit of Shishapangma, which stands at 8,027 meters, at 6:05 AM local time in Tibet.

Born in Sankhuwasabha but raised in Kathmandu, Nima’s upbringing was different from many Sherpas; he attended a well-equipped school and received strong support from his parents. Just moments after reaching the summit, he shared the moment with his father via satellite phone.

His father, Tashi Lakpa Sherpa, expressed pride in Nima’s achievement and noted that despite initial concerns about securing necessary permissions from China, everything went smoothly for the climb. Tashi described Nima as calm and composed during their conversation after the summit.

Nima dedicated his accomplishment to the youth and specifically to Sherpas through a Facebook post celebrating his project “Sherpa Power.” He emphasized that his journey represents not just personal success but also a broader message for young Sherpas to aspire beyond traditional roles. He aims to reshape perceptions of Sherpas as elite athletes rather than merely guides.

His journey began in September 2022 with the ascent of Manaslu and took nearly two years to complete all 14 peaks. Notable climbs include Mount Everest and K2. Nima’s achievements symbolize unity and resilience, as he called for love and respect amidst global divisions.

Rakesh Gurung from Nepal’s Department of Tourism confirmed that Nima’s record has been validated and mentioned ongoing discussions about honoring him for his accomplishments. Climbing all 8,000-meter peaks is a rare achievement that tests both physical and mental endurance. Nima shared that during challenging moments, he draws strength from his identity as a Sherpa.
