The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for New York City, effective from 1:00 PM today until 8:00 PM tomorrow, August 1st.

High heat and humidity are expected, with heat indices reaching between 95 and 100 degrees. These conditions pose a health risk to all residents, but particularly to the elderly, young children, and individuals with chronic health conditions.

To stay safe during the heat wave, avoid strenuous outdoor activities. People with lung conditions such as asthma should limit prolonged exertion. It’s crucial to stay hydrated and find air-conditioned spaces to cool down.

Extreme heat is a serious public health threat, and last year alone, 350 New Yorkers died prematurely from preventable heat illness. Elderly residents, young children, and those with chronic health conditions are most at risk.

To stay safe during the heat wave, avoid strenuous outdoor activity and stay hydrated.

If you don’t have air conditioning, seek refuge in public cooling centers or air-conditioned spaces. It’s crucial to check on vulnerable neighbors and loved ones. Be aware of the signs of heat illness, such as hot, dry skin, confusion, and difficulty breathing. If you experience these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately. Heat exhaustion symptoms include heavy sweating, muscle cramps, and lightheadedness.

To prepare for extreme heat, understand your risk factors by consulting with your doctor. If you don’t have air conditioning, explore resources like the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP). Stay informed by signing up for Notify NYC emergency alerts. Additionally, create a heat emergency plan for yourself and your family, including having a backup cooling location and emergency supplies.

The City is committed to helping residents stay safe during the heat wave.

Cooling centers will be open throughout the five boroughs, and the NYC Fire Department and Department of Environmental Protection may distribute hydrant spray caps.
