NepYork, a showcase of Nepalis in New York, enters its third year today.
“We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished in such a short time,” said Kishor Panthi, Editor-in-Chief of NepYork. “Being recognized by the New York Times and receiving funding from the Google News Initiative are testaments to the quality and impact of our journalism.”
NepYork’s achievements extend beyond editorial recognition. The platform participated in election reporting fellowships with the City University of New York’s Center for Community Media (CCM) and joined LION Publishers, the largest organization of local independent publishers in the United States.
“Our commitment goes beyond informing the community,” Panthi continued. “We actively participate in initiatives like the Democracy Day program and educational conferences, fostering deeper engagement with our audience.”
Additionally, the platform was selected for LION’s Sustainability Audits and Funding program, securing resources for continued growth.
Looking ahead, NepYork remains dedicated to amplifying the voices and achievements of Nepalis in New York. “We’re grateful for the support we’ve received in our first two years,” concluded Panthi. “As we enter our third year, we’re excited to continue serving the community and bringing their stories to the forefront.”

Reports like ‘Pandemic learning loss: A mother’s story of how two Nepali sisters coped with remote schooling’ from Queens, NYC shed light on critical issues faced by the community. NepYork’s reporting has even had tangible outcomes, such as facilitating the connection between elected officials and the family of a deceased Nepali man in a New York City jail, leading to a dignified funeral.
NepYork champions cultural representation by featuring stories about festivals, traditions, and the achievements of Nepali individuals, fostering a sense of pride and connection within the community.
NepYork dedicates resources to covering complex legal and immigration issues, offering guides, updates, and resources for legal assistance. NepYork bridges the gap by offering accessible information on healthcare and education resources, empowering the community to make informed decisions.
