In the first four months of the current fiscal year (October 2023 through January 2024), a total of 395 Nepali individuals received H-1B visas, allowing them to work in the United States with specialized skills and knowledge. This number reflects a steady increase compared to previous years, highlighting the growing demand for skilled Nepali professionals in the American job market.
Looking at the breakdown of approvals, November witnessed the highest number of H-1B visas issued to Nepali applicants, with 150 individuals securing this coveted opportunity. October, December, and January saw figures of 90, 99, and 53 approvals, respectively. The data also includes dependent H-4 visas issued to family members of the primary H-1B visa holders. In the same period, 99 H-4 visas were granted to dependents accompanying the Nepali H-1B recipients.
This positive trend aligns with the broader growth observed in recent years. The number of H-1B visas issued to Nepali citizens has been steadily increasing since 2019, with the figure reaching 1135 in 2023. This represents a significant rise compared to just 327 approvals granted in 2021.
The H-1B visa is specifically designed for foreign workers with specialized knowledge in fields such as IT, engineering, and other specialized professions. To qualify for this visa, individuals typically require a minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in their field. The initial visa duration is 3 years, with the possibility of extension for up to 6 years before needing to be renewed.
For those seeking to apply for the H-1B visa in the coming year, the registration window for the fiscal year 2025 lottery opens on March 6, 2024, and closes at noon on March 22, 2024. Only employers or their authorized representatives can register workers for the lottery. Individual applications from workers themselves are not accepted.
