The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that more than 2.5 million non-citizens who were present in the country without legal authorization have departed the United States since January 20, 2025.
The department’s statement attributes the figures to recent enforcement actions and voluntary departures under the current administration.
According to the DHS press release, enforcement operations since January 20 have resulted in over 605,000 formal deportations. The department indicated that its operations have focused on removing individuals identified as “criminal illegal aliens.”
In addition to formal removals, the DHS reported that 1.9 million non-citizens without legal authorization have “voluntarily self-deported” during the same time frame. The release also encouraged non-citizens without legal status to utilize the “CBP Home app” to receive assistance with travel arrangements and a financial incentive to leave the country.
Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin stated that the figures represent “historic records” and noted that DHS enforcement has also resulted in the arrest of over 595,000 non-citizens since January 20.
The DHS release credited President Trump and Secretary Noem for authorizing expanded operations by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The department further claimed that the border is the “most secure in history.”
