The Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) issued a statement denouncing the Trump administration’s recent actions targeting immigrants and legal permanent residents. The bicameral group of 79 lawmakers accused the administration of undermining constitutional rights and the rule of law through a series of controversial immigration measures.
In its statement, CAPAC warned of an “unprecedented assault” on democratic principles, citing efforts to deport legal permanent residents without due process, proposals to eliminate birthright citizenship, and attempts to override judicial rulings. “The danger of such actions—and the threat they pose to our democracy—cannot be overstated,” the statement read.
The caucus drew parallels between the administration’s tactics and authoritarian regimes, alleging that President Trump is scapegoating immigrant communities to erode foundational American values. Lawmakers specifically criticized the administration’s invocation of a law historically used to intern Japanese Americans during World War II, calling it a pretext for bypassing established immigration laws under the banner of national security.

“President Trump’s actions are ripping families apart and sending a chilling message that no one is safe—not even legal permanent residents who pay taxes, contribute to the economy, and have called this country home for years,” the statement continued. CAPAC, whose constituency includes a significant number of foreign-born individuals, expressed particular concern for Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders, warning that these communities could be disproportionately targeted.
Led by Congresswoman Grace Meng (D-NY), who was elected CAPAC Chair in 2024, the caucus called on all Americans to oppose the administration’s policies. “If we don’t speak up now, this administration will continue to trample on our constitutional rights and target individuals it disagrees with,” they cautioned, posing a stark question: “Who will be next?”
Founded in 1994, CAPAC represents a coalition of lawmakers dedicated to advocating for the rights and interests of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities. The group urged unity in defending the nation’s commitment to justice and due process, asserting, “We must take a stand to ensure we remain a nation of laws, not one ruled by a king.”
