Tragic Nepal Cannoning Accident Claims Life of 22-Year-Old Anjita Bhandari from Baltimore

In a devastating incident, 22-year-old Anjita Bhandari, a resident of Baltimore, Maryland, USA, lost her life in a cannoning accident while on vacation in Nepal. Anjita, who had recently completed her bachelor’s degree in computer science from a university in Maryland, was visiting her ancestral home in Kaski when the tragic accident occurred.

Anjita had come to Nepal to celebrate her well-deserved break after completing her studies. Excited to explore the natural beauty of her family’s homeland, she and her sister embarked on a trip to the picturesque Pokhara Canon in Machhapuchhre Rural Municipality 9 Ghalel.

The cannoning adventure, however, took a devastating turn when Anjita fell from a height of approximately 140 feet.  Local authorities rushed her to Manipal Hospital for emergency medical attention. Despite the best efforts of the medical staff, Anjita tragically succumbed to her injuries and passed away on Wednesday.

The news of Anjita’s untimely demise sent shockwaves through her family and friends, both in Nepal and the United States. Her father, Tirth Bhandari, a social activist who had been living in the USA since 2011, immediately traveled to Nepal with other family members upon hearing the heart-wrenching news. Anjita had moved to the USA in 2017 along with her mother, sister, and brother.

Maryland state delegate Harry Bhandari, who knew Anjita personally, expressed his deep grief and condolences for the bereaved family. He described Anjita as a friendly, smart, and helpful individual who was actively involved in social activities. She had also volunteered in his election campaign, demonstrating her commitment to making a positive impact on the community.

The entire Nepalese Diaspora in the USA and the community back in Nepal mourn the loss of a promising young life. Anjita’s friends and acquaintances remember her as a curious and compassionate soul, making the news of her passing even more difficult to bear.

Anjita Bhandari’s funeral took place at Ramghat in Pokhara, surrounded by grieving family and friends. Her departure has left a void in the hearts of those who knew her and serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of life.

As the investigation into the tragic cannoning accident continues, authorities and adventure sports enthusiasts emphasize the importance of safety precautions and responsible tourism to prevent such unfortunate incidents in the future.
