USCIS to Provide Documented Evidence of Immigration Status to Asylees and Lawful Permanent Residents

USCIS announced today that it will begin providing documented evidence of immigration status to certain new asylees and lawful permanent residents upon receiving notification that an immigration judge or the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) has granted status. This new effort will help eliminate the burden of in-person appointments for individuals who have already been granted their status by an immigration judge or the BIA.

The USCIS field offices may now provide this documentation by mail, which is a significant relief to the individuals who have already been through a lengthy legal process. This new effort began in August 2022, with USCIS mailing Form I-94, Arrival/Departure Record, with asylee stamps to certain individuals who have been granted asylum by an immigration judge or the BIA. Additionally, USCIS has also been issuing Permanent Resident Cards, also known as Green Cards, to some lawful permanent residents when they are notified that the immigration judge or BIA has granted adjustment of status.

This new initiative will help new asylees and lawful permanent residents seek employment, travel, and obtain other benefits they are entitled to. USCIS encourages individuals who have been granted asylum or lawful permanent resident status to contact the USCIS Contact Center to request their proof of status because USCIS may not be notified in every case.

With this new effort, USCIS aims to make the process of obtaining documented evidence of immigration status easier and less burdensome for new asylees and lawful permanent residents.
