The Nepali Embassy in the US is now processing applications for customers who were unable to recover their money orders and cashier’s checks due to theft during a consular service camp in Texas last December. The embassy has released a statement saying that they are processing applications for all customers who are unable to cancel and send a canceled money order or cashier’s check, including those who did not send a new money order or cashier’s check.
The embassy has informed that the new passports of the applicants will be sent to the addresses of the respective applicants as soon as they are received. However, the embassy had not processed applications that did not receive a new money order or cashier’s check. Out of a total of 936 clients who received services from consular service camps in Texas, new money orders or cashier’s checks have been received from 438 people who canceled their money orders or cashier’s checks. As the applications of the mentioned clients are processed as soon as the money order or cashier’s check is received, the embassy is sending new passports to the addresses of 240 clients.
Houston police are investigating the theft of money orders and cashier’s checks, and the embassy has requested customers who have not yet sent their canceled money orders and cashier’s checks to cancel them and send new ones to recover the stolen revenue of the Government of Nepal. The embassy has also requested that customers who receive information that their money order or cashier’s check has been illegally exchanged should inform consularhouston@nepalembassyusa.org of the proof and assist in the investigation process of the police.
Nearly $200,000 worth of money orders and cashier’s checks were stolen from consular service camps organized in Dallas, Austin, and Houston, Texas, from December 15th to 20th. On Thursday, December 22nd, while the embassy staff was on their way from Houston to Washington DC, their parked vehicle was vandalized and robbed at 12:30 PM local time. Although the money orders and cashier’s checks were stolen in December, the embassy has confirmed that the sensitive personal information of the customers is safe.
