Sakela Dance is performed by Nepali indigenous Kirat Rai in Maryland

The second gathering of the United Kirat Rai Organization of America’s Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania Chapter has concluded with Sakela dancing. At a recent gathering in Maryland, USA, certificates were awarded to elected officials and life members from the organization’s recent convention.

Former President of United Kirat Rai Organization of America Milan Rai, President of Hami Nepali Global New York Chapter Dhrub Kunwar, Central Vice President of United Kirat Rai Organization Keshav Rai, President of United Kirat Rai Organization New York Chapter Mamata Khaling Rai extended best wishes at the program. They also invited all Nepalis in the United States to attend the Sakela event in New York on July 10.

Central Vice President of United Kirat Rai Organization Keshav Rai taught Sakela Sili to the children in the program.

Sakela dance is a ritual dance performed by large groups of Kirat Rai on wearing their traditional attire. People from all ages dance together in a large circle. There are male and female leaders in each circle known as Silimangpa and Silimangma respectively. They choreograph the dance moves known as sili while others follow them. The sili reflects the different aspects of human life and their relationship with nature.
